Gazipur, Bangladesh – Authorities have recovered the body of a Bangladesh Army soldier, identified as SM Sourav Hossain, found hanging in an under-construction building at Rajendrapur Cantonment in Gazipur on Sunday, June 1, 2025. Police have described the incident as an apparent suicide, though the reasons behind the act remain under investigation.
The body of Hossain, a 30-year-old member of the 11 Military Police Unit stationed at the cantonment, was discovered by colleagues early Sunday morning around 5:00 AM. He was found suspended from an iron pipe with a rope tied around his neck, dressed in his military uniform. Police promptly recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy.
Abdul Halim, the officer-in-charge at Joydepur Police Station, confirmed the details to local media, stating, “Sourav Hossain was found hanging in an under-construction building within the 902 Central Workshop soldier line. He was in uniform at the time. We have sent the body for autopsy, but the exact reasons for the suicide are not yet clear and will be determined after a thorough investigation.” Halim added that the Bangladesh Army would provide further details as the inquiry progresses.
Hossain, a resident of Garaganj village in Shailkupa Upazila, Jhenaidah district, was the son of Uzir Ali Molla. He leaves behind a wife, a daughter, and a son, according to police reports. Prior to the incident, Hossain had reportedly transferred Tk 14,000 to his mobile phone from a colleague, Lance Corporal Yasir Arafat, prompting his unit to place him under surveillance. Authorities noted that he was accompanied by a guard to the washroom before making his way to the under-construction site where the incident occurred. The Bangladesh Army has not yet released an official comment, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police and army officials have assured a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances leading to Hossain’s death. The autopsy report and further inquiries are expected to shed light on the factors contributing to this tragic event.
