Tamabil, Bangladesh – On May 8, 2025, a confrontation erupted at the Tamabil border in Sylhet’s Gowainghat Upazila, where local Bangladeshi residents clashed with India’s Border Security Force (BSF) over a playground in the Noljhuri area. The incident occurred during a routine border survey, highlighting local sensitivities over land boundaries.
The clash took place as a joint Bangladesh-India survey team worked to demarcate boundaries affected by the 2015 Land Boundary Agreement. The playground in Noljhuri, partially under Indian jurisdiction since the agreement, became a flashpoint when locals accused the BSF of encroaching on Bangladeshi land. Hundreds of residents gathered, chanting slogans and engaging in a brief scuffle with the BSF, who reportedly retreated.
The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB), led by Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Haque of the 48th Battalion, intervened to de-escalate. Haque clarified that the incident was a misunderstanding, not a direct conflict between BGB and BSF, and explained the boundary details to locals. The survey team completed its work without further disruption.
The 2015 Land Boundary Agreement resolved long-standing border disputes by exchanging enclaves, but areas like Noljhuri remain contentious due to local unawareness of the boundary changes. The playground has been a focal point for community activities, making it a sensitive issue for residents.
Bangladesh’s authorities described the incident as a “localized misunderstanding” and emphasized the BGB’s role in resolving it. India has not issued an official statement, but BSF sources indicated the survey was routine. No injuries were reported, and the situation stabilized after BGB’s intervention.
